Why our brains were never designed for constant stimulation
Have you ever noticed that you can wake up feeling perfectly calm, only to feel overwhelmed within an hour?
Before you've even had breakfast, you've checked your phone, replied to messages, looked at emails, read the news, checked the weather, scrolled social media and started thinking about everything you need to do that day.
Your brain hasn't even had a chance to wake up naturally before it's already processing hundreds of pieces of information.
It's no wonder anxiety is becoming one of the fastest-growing challenges affecting both adults and young people.
Our brains haven't changed BUT our world has
For thousands of years, the human brain evolved to deal with periods of activity followed by periods of rest. Our ancestors woke with the sun. Their brains focused on immediate priorities; finding food, caring for family, building shelter and responding to genuine danger.
There were long stretches of quiet where the brain wasn't constantly making decisions.
Today, our brains are expected to do something completely different.

Our brains are constantly switching attention from one thing to another. This constant stream of stimulation doesn't only affect adults.
Children are growing up in an environment where constant sensory input is considered normal.
Teenagers are navigating school, friendships, social media and online communication simultaneously, while young adults are juggling study, work, finances and relationships in a world that rarely slows down.
Parents often carry the mental load of managing not only their own responsibilities but also those of the entire family, leaving little opportunity for genuine mental rest.
The cost of constant switching
Many people believe multitasking makes us more productive.
In reality, our brains don't truly multitask they rapidly switch between tasks. Every switch requires the brain to stop one thought process and activate another. Psychologists call this task switching, and each switch comes with a mental cost. The more frequently we change our attention, the harder our brain has to work. By the end of the day many people aren't physically exhausted, they're mentally overloaded.
This constant cognitive load can contribute to:

However, when our brain interprets every notification, email or message as something demanding our attention, those systems are activated far more often than they were designed to be. Over time this can leave us feeling tense, restless and constantly "on."
When the stress response is activated repeatedly over long periods, the brain begins to expect constant stimulation and vigilance. This can make relaxation feel uncomfortable, increase emotional reactivity and make it harder to concentrate, sleep and regulate emotions.
For children and teenagers, whose brains are still wiring themselves through experience, these patterns can become deeply ingrained if healthy habits aren't developed early.
Why anxiety feels so common today
Anxiety isn't always caused by one big event. Often it's the accumulation of hundreds of tiny demands on our attention every single day. Our brains rarely get the opportunity to slow down. The result is a nervous system that stays on high alert, even when we're sitting safely on the couch.
For teenagers, this may present as heightened anxiety around school, friendships or social situations. Many feel they must always be available online, respond immediately to messages and compare themselves with carefully curated lives on social media. This constant comparison and pressure to stay connected can contribute to low self-esteem, perfectionism and feelings of inadequacy.
Young adults often experience similar pressures while navigating university, careers, financial independence and relationships. When combined with a brain that is already overloaded with information, even everyday challenges can begin to feel overwhelming.
Parents are not immune either. Many describe feeling mentally exhausted before the day has even begun. Between work demands, family schedules, school communications, household responsibilities and digital interruptions, their brains are constantly processing information. This ongoing mental load can contribute to increased stress, irritability, burnout and reduced emotional capacity to respond calmly to their children.

Five simple ways to calm an overstimulated brain
1. Avoid screens for the first hour after waking
Your brain naturally transitions from sleep to full alertness. Giving yourself an hour before checking your phone allows your brain to wake gradually instead of immediately reacting to messages, emails and social media. You'll often notice greater calm and clearer thinking throughout the day.
For children and teenagers, delaying screens before school can improve attention, emotional regulation and readiness to learn. Instead of beginning the day reacting to external stimulation, they have an opportunity to wake naturally, connect with family and prepare mentally for the day ahead.
2. Turn off non-essential notifications
Every notification interrupts your attention. Even if you don't open it, your brain has already shifted focus. By keeping only essential notifications on, you reduce unnecessary interruptions and allow your brain to stay focused on one task at a time.
Parents can also model this behaviour. Children learn more from what they observe than what they're told. When they see adults putting phones away during meals or conversations, they learn that people deserve our full attention.
3. Create technology-free moments every day
Schedule small periods where your phone is away and out of sight. Even 20–30 minutes of uninterrupted time allows your brain to recover from constant stimulation. Reading, walking, gardening or simply sitting outside can all help reset your nervous system.
For families, creating daily screen-free routines whether it's during dinner, after school or before bedtime it strengthens connection, encourages conversation and gives everyone's brain an opportunity to slow down together.
4. Do one thing at a time
Despite what we often believe, multitasking reduces efficiency and increases mental fatigue. When you focus on one task before moving to the next, your brain performs more efficiently and with far less stress. Single-tasking also helps improve concentration and reduces the mental clutter that often fuels anxiety.

5. Spend time in nature
Natural environments provide a very different type of sensory input compared with busy urban environments. Research has shown that spending time in green spaces can reduce stress, lower cortisol levels and improve mood. Even a 20-minute walk around your local park can help your nervous system settle.
Children benefit enormously from unstructured outdoor play. Climbing, exploring, imagining and simply being outside supports emotional resilience, creativity, problem-solving and healthy brain development in ways that screens simply cannot replicate.
The long-term picture
If we continue to normalise constant stimulation, we risk raising a generation that rarely experiences stillness.
Children may struggle to tolerate boredom, yet boredom is often where imagination, creativity and problem-solving begin.
Teenagers may find it increasingly difficult to concentrate, regulate emotions and develop confidence away from online validation.
Young adults may enter adulthood feeling permanently overwhelmed, believing that constant busyness is simply how life is meant to feel.
Parents may become increasingly burnt out, making it harder to be emotionally present for the people who matter most.
The encouraging news is that our brains are adaptable. Small, consistent changes in our daily habits can strengthen attention, improve emotional regulation and reduce anxiety at any age.
The goal isn't to eliminate technology. Technology has made our lives easier in many ways.
The goal is to become intentional about how much information we allow into our brains. Every time we reduce unnecessary stimulation, we give our nervous system an opportunity to recover. Small daily habits repeated consistently can have a profound impact on reducing anxiety and improving emotional wellbeing.
